What's Included

Choosing the Right Strobe
I guide you through the process of selecting the right strobe and clear up any confusion you have.

Removing the Mystery
I break down the basics of lighting to a point that even a third grader could understand. Once you understand how quality light is generated from soft to harsh, it becomes possible to create any lighting approach on the planet.

Lighting Verbiage
When we use terms to define a given approach, it can dilute the creative process because we feel obligated to stick within the box that approach defines. But, I believe, the final image is a thousand times more important than the term or definition we attach to it.

Essential Gear Talk
This lesson on gear was recorded at the Westcott headquarters studio. I get a bit more into how modifiers work and what to look for when you are making decisions to purchase gear.

Light Control: Distance
In this session, I take a subject and explain how light is controlled by distance. By moving the light or modifier close to the subject and then slowly backing it away, showing side-by-side comparisons in real time of how the quality of light changes.

Light Control: Size
I explain how light is controlled by the size of the source and the size of the modifier. By changing up the size of the modifier, you can see in real time how the quality of light changes.

Light Control: Bounce
One of the final factors that can be used to control the quality of light is the use of a reflector or reflective surface, as well as the amount of ambient light allowed to influence your scene or subject.

Diffused versus Reflective
When you examine the concept, the broader your light is to your subject, the softer or harsher the quality of light, making it easier to understand the difference between using a modifier and using a white reflective flat or panel.

Mastering Rembrandt
It has often been stated that the Classic Rembrandt Cross light is the most beautiful light on the planet. It is essential for photographers to learn and master, and it is known as the "Money Light" when it comes to utilizing the marketplace.

Top Down Beauty Light
This light approach mimics light falling from overhead and slightly forward of the subject. In the real world, we see this on an overcast day or when standing in an alley with an open sky overhead. It is also a lighting approach used in the beauty and fashion industry.

Mastering the Beauty Dish
l take a 24-inch beauty dish and demonstrates how to master it using a beauty model. I show you that by observing the shadows from the eyebrows, nose, lips, and chin, you can find the most flattering angle or position to place the beauty dish.

Comparing Setups
It is often beneficial to use a visual approach in real-time by using side-by-side comparisons when teaching a concept. In this session, I emphasize once more how size plays into shaping the quality of light to the subject.

Simulating Sunlight
We generally associate Sunlight with harsh, unflattering light for the subject. In most cases, this is true. In this lesson, I demonstrate how to use a harsh light source and soften it by adding a second light source to fill in the harsh shadows.

Simulating Sunlight with a Hat
Over the past few years, I have built a body of work using the Simulating Sunlight approach on models, cowboys, etc., wearing a hat. The hat becomes a striking element that can create some interesting results.

Dramatic Edgy Three Light Portrait
Several years ago, I began creating a body of work using the Dramatic Edgy Three Light approach on sports subjects, motorcycle riders, cowboys, and others. Now, I take you step-by-step through how to create this approach.
